I haven't been listening to as many podcasts recently, as I resumed cycling in May after a couple of years off (hurt my back in the fall of 2007 and got out of the habit). But these are some of my favourites:

The Writer's Almanac, Garrison Keillor. First thing I'd listen to each morning as I walked out the door to get to the bus.

In Our Time with Melvin Bragg. Brilliant people discussing brilliant topics brilliantly. Did I mention that they are smart?

CBC Ideas -- not just obligatory Canadian content.

To The Best Of Our Knowledge -- similar to Ideas, but 'mercan.

Open Source, most interesting to me in the run-up to Obama's election. Christopher Lydon is great (Dresden Dolls even wrote a song about him).

CBC Writers and Company with Eleanor Wachtel.

I'm trying out TED and NPR's Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! (which I've heard you reference many times before)

My most consistent favorite is actually NPR's Planet Money. I really like the staff and they've often got some great anecdotes that I can mull over for a while.

I've also starting listening to The Moth. They are unscripted, humorous, short stories told to a live audience and are often pretty entertaining. I would recommend trying Susan Duncan: Finding Esther or Josh Axelrad: The Cockroach.

Thanks, George. Interesting post. I also listen to the Shields and Brooks Newshour podcast - 10 - 12 minutes long of news analysis from two guys presenting the opposite points of view.
